Sustainability & Weddings

When I was planning my own wedding 10 years ago, we wanted to keep it as sustainable as possile. Funny how 10 years later, I would implement the same practices (and maybe a few more). Here are my tips, many of which are as gentle on the earth as they are on your pocket book.

Local Vendors
Going with small and local vendors lowers your carbon footprint. Distance and gas utilization aside, local companies are often connected with other local vendors and supply sources. These connections

Flowers
When choosing flowers, I always advise clients to choose their color palette and stay open to seasonal blooms within those colors. Many local florists work with growers and wholesale markets in your area. Blooms from these sources have a lower carbon footprint and generally contain far fewer chemicals (if they have any at all). And speaking of florists. Ask about reusable and chemical-free options in your arrangements (e.g. chicken wire or flower frogs) that forego floral foam, which is toxic.

Rentals/Items
Some venues come with everything from chairs to linens to glassware. Others you have to get more creative with. Before searching on Amazon for items you won't use again, check what local rental companies might have what you're looking for or borrow from friends. Facebook Marketplace is also a great resource. I offer lending items to my clients so they don't have find things like easels and card boxes.

Favors
While many weddings these days don't have favors, they can still be a sweet touch. There are plenty of favors out there that largely get tossed or are left unused, but there are some really great low-waste ideas if you do choose to include them. For my own wedding we made a donation to a favorite charity (The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association) in honor of our guests and let them know on some wildflower seed paper we had at the place setting. Other ideas include mini glass jars of local honey, spices, or salt. I also love local chocolate as a takeaway treat!

Happy (sustainable) planning!
